MMZ-200 precision scale: 200 grams down to a hundredth of a gram
The MMZ-200 belongs to the MZ series by Myco, a brand of On Balance. It is a flip model: the lid folds over the weighing platform, keeping crumbs and scratches off it while the scale travels. Open it up and you find a stainless steel platform of roughly 7.5 by 6.4 centimetres and a display with blue backlighting that stays readable in a dim room. The scale itself measures about 12.6 x 7.6 x 1.8 centimetres and weighs around 115 grams with batteries, so an inside pocket takes it easily.
The range reaches 200 grams in increments of 0.01 gram. Beyond grams you can switch between six weighing units, ounce, carat and grain among them, which helps with jewellery or gemstones. Flat control buttons sit beside the display: mode for the unit, tare to subtract the weight of a dish or bag from the total, and an on and off key. After a spell of inactivity the scale shuts itself down to spare the batteries. Two AAA cells are supplied. Printed inside the lid is a short guide covering the steps for weighing, taring and calibrating.
What to watch out for while weighing
That same guide advises keeping the scale away from uneven surfaces, vibration, air currents, high humidity, extreme temperatures and equipment that causes radio interference. The warning earns its place: a wobbly table or an open window explains most odd readings. Calibrate with a certified calibration weight rather than a coin or something else from the drawer, since the stated weight of such objects is rarely exact.
